Kyrgyzstan withdraws anti-gay bill for "gay propaganda"
Quote:
Last Wednesday, it was decided in a vote by 90 votes to two, implement the controversial law. After this second reading, it would come into force after a final third reading. In the fall of so massive tightening of criminal law and in laws on freedom of assembly and media regulation would have occurred. The law would have the ban includes, "to create a positive attitude towards non-traditional relationships."
Kyrgyzstan would have gone even further with his amendment, as its Russian model. For offenses in the presence of young people, or in case of recurrence of imprisonment of up to six months were provided. For "lighter" misdemeanor fines up to the amount of half a month's salary.
The plans of Kyrgyzstan sparked worldwide protests. Human rights organizations were up in arms against the proposed law. So the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) threatened with consequences for granted the land development aid. Now the government relented.
Although the withdrawal of the draft legislation can first take a deep breath: Kyrgyzstan is a country where homophobia is still strong. The statement of the deputy Narynbjek Moldobajew last year that he wanted to shoot gays and lesbians prefer, had no effect on him. A similar requirement of an American lawyer, however, made lately of global turmoil and a ban on the referendum initiated by him by a Californian court.
