Citizenship refers to nationality and Africa isn't a country and therefore can't be a reference to nationality. In that sense, they would be Kenyan-American, Namibian-American, Ugandan-American etc.

African American is a flawed term that only came about because the tarnishing of black and african as descriptors

If an Asian person walked around saying they were "white" in America hey would be looked at as if they were crazy.

You can be white and Asian at the same time, if you are mixed with European and Asian ancestry. Someone called white in America, is of Wuropean decent. Someone called black, is African-American. Those terms aren't used to describe anyone else. People associate the color yellow with Asians in America.

I live in South America and we understand, simply put, that white and black are colors. We're even lightyears past the use of the "race" word: the term is offensive, as we're not dogs or cats to have races.

Yeah -- it can be funny in casual talks, but there have been instances where Whites from Africa have sued over not being able to apply for scholarships, eligible for awards etc intended for African Americans and that's the kind of thing where it gets more serious and is a more touchy subject in general.

Yeah until someone who isn't white faces discrimination. Usually places that push aside race are just as bad as places that put race too much at the center. The former tends to brush off racial incidents and ignore the oppressed minority. The latter makes it their cause to demean the other non - standard group.

Americans are obsessed with race because it's too much of an issue. And minorities tend to be outspoken about these things. In other places where race "doesn't exist" the non majority group has no voice and they suffer discrimination but can't and often, won't do anything about it.

I am pretty sure white people in Souther Africa (and Africa in general) haven't been there for that long. Same for North Africa, the French had a colony in Algeria but all of them are exiled and I doubt they would identify as African

Many governments consider North Africans white, which means they have been there for a Millennium. However, you might be talking about Sub-Sahran Africans who are black.

I think they consider North Africans Caucasian but American society usually doesn't see Arab or Middle Eastern people as white unless their skin is actually white (I know it's dumb as hell but race is such a complex issue in the US). So yeah, I doubt a Moroccan or Algerian would identify as 'African American.'
