You should make a recovery disc regardless if you decide to update or not, it's just prudent

instructions, hit USB recovery drive (but you can use a dvd if you want).
You don't need anything for the update itself. The computer will just quietly prepare itself via Windows Update and then tell you it's going to upgrade to 10. Then it will take a while to install but you'll retain all your files/programs.
Or that's how my Insider preview upgraded, anyway. I'm assuming the official rollout will be done the same way for those who reserved a copy of 10.
It will be very simple to upgrade.

I think you're fine, the free update for people running a genuine copy of 7 or 8/8.1 will be available for a full year.
