Ralph Lauren’s decidedly edgier line has a history of tapping young, up-and-coming musicians. For its past two fall campaigns, the brand collaborated with Avicii on a number of music videos, including the Swedish DJ’s hit single “Wake Me Up.” So it should come as no surprise that the fashion giant planned a big number for its buzzy new headliners: A remake of the iconic 1970s song “Express Yourself”, which they filmed in N.Y.C.’s legendary Electric Lady Studios. (Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and Patti Smith have all recorded there.)
“Being able to play guitar at Electric Lady, it was just so sick,” says Simpson. “I’m a crazy Hendrix fan, so being there was rad for me.”
Adds Tinashe, who’s going on tour with Nicki Minaj later this year: “The set was really fun. We had a dance break…I don’t even know what to call it…a parody type thing that we were filming, and it just brought out all of the moves.” (For the record, Simpson swears he mostly “just stood there with [his] guitar and was chilling” during the dance party.)
