South Florida... *sigh*
West Palm Beach (north), Fort Lauderdale (central), and Miami (south). Most of the people part of the scene weren't born in Florida, many of them are from the midwest and northeast USA, the Caribbean, and South America.
WPB has a few bars, very spread out. Most folks come down to FTL and sometimes Miami. There's a community center and the Planned Parenthood's are very gay friendly.
FTL is the center of the gay scene, very progressive and visible community, nightclubs, bathhouses, strip clubs, non profit agencies, and gay owned businesses. It's home to Wilton Manors, which is a gay city. There are GSAs in pretty much every high school and college. The community is very involved with politics, public health, and education. I work in sexual health education and it's a HUGE field.
Miami is a bit ratchet, some nice clubs downtown, but Miami Beach is better. There's a gay part of the beach, Palace on Ocean Drive has drag shows in the street and popular brunch, while clubs like Twist and Score are always crowded. Miami's also a lot more conservative and middle class.
There are drag queens at every club. Miami has a small, but growing ballroom/voguing scene. The apps like Grindr, Jackd, A4A, Ok Cupid, etc are pretty commonplace. Almost everyone knows each other somehow. Transgender visibility and protection is growing.
