Tons of artists do this. Cheryl finished Only Human by May 2014, then picked the first and second singles which were released before the album eventually was in November 2014. Little Mix have their album done and have now premiered their first single. JT recorded both 20/20 albums in 2012 and didn't release them until 2013. This release plan is very common, especially to make sure you release the right singles by having the album completed and you don't release a single then after its release go in and record a smash which you wish you had released as the first single.
