His intentions were in the right places and kudos to him for trying, but this isn't really a true representation of the general public's feelings/thoughts on HIV. I mean, just because some people chose not to hug him it doesn't make them 'ignorant' - maybe they just don't feel comfortable touching a complete stranger?
Sadly, I think these sort of things are done in vein. Unfortunately HIV is still associated with promiscuous gay men, even more unfortunate that many many gay men sadly compound this stereotype. I've only ever met two HIV+ people in my life (friends of friends), they were both gay and would openly admit they caught it due to promiscuity and recklessness. Of course there are many exceptions to this stereotype, but it's still considered a "gay" thing that we will probably never see change in our lifetime.
