I'm so happy she did this. Whether it's still up or not, a statement was made. Actions were done. She took matters into her own hands, and this is what we need to see. She is going to inspire more people to take social activism in their own hands and that is what I like to see. Those saying it was unnecessary clearly don't understand the full scope of her actions and what it means, especially to those who the flag symbolizes hate and disrespect towards. You go girl.

I was just pointing out how people that just say or do nothing and wait for things to correct themselves usually end up with just that -- nothing.

And that is the entire point of conscious disobedience. Some people are willing to sacrifice their clean record to take a stand and make damn sure that they are heard even if it comes at personal expense (like having to explain to future prospective employers/schools why you have a criminal record). The flag is still flying over the state house and it doesn't matter whether or not it would have eventually come down a year, five or ten years from now, there was a statement she felt needed to be made TODAY about something that should have been corrected long ago.

The purpose isn't lose on me either, I just think it's stupid to do it now. Seems more like a 15 minutes of fame grab. Why not do it years ago when people eyes were closed to the issue.

What even? This is not a new debate at all.

This has been going on for DECADES. I remember as a kid in the early 2000s, my parents cancelling our annual Myrtle Beach trips due to boycotting over that flag and we started going to Wilmington or Ft. Lauderdale instead. Just because something may be new to YOU doesn't mean it hasn't been something heavily debated by others for years prior.

Lawmakers fail to pass legislation to remove the flag from the dome and put two Confederate flags on the Statehouse grounds.

1995 — Legislators pass a law to protect the flag during Statehouse renovations and give lawmakers sole power to remove it. Coble drops his lawsuit.

1996 — Republican Gov. David Beasley proposes moving the flag to a Statehouse monument.

1997 — The House rejects Beasley's plan but passes a flag bill that the Senate lets die. In March, Beasley concedes defeat on the issue.

1998 — In September, Beasley repeats his pledge to never again try to remove flag. Democratic challenger Jim Hodges also promises not to revive the issue. Hodges defeats Beasley, thanks in part to the influence of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. In October, the NAACP demonstrates at the Statehouse.

1999 — In June, black lawmakers find that legislative manual covers are printed with images showing the flag in the background. On July 15, the national NAACP passes a boycott resolution. Five days later, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference moves its annual 2000 convention from Charleston. Hodges meets with NAACP leaders and begins polling lawmakers.

2000 — The NAACP boycott begins Jan. 1. At a presidential debate, a question on the flag prompts boos. The next day, Jan. 8, more than 6,000 flag supporters march on the Statehouse. On Jan. 17, more than 45,000 flag opponents march on the Statehouse in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. A month later, Hodges proposes moving the flag to an out-of-the-way monument, but that goes nowhere. In April, Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. marches 120 miles to Columbia in a five-day anti-flag protest.

The Senate votes to take the flag down April 12. The House does so May 10. A compromise version of the bills is worked out. Hodges signs it May 23.

The Senate removes its Confederate flag June 30. The House follows July 1. The Confederate flag is lowered from the Statehouse dome. Moments later, Civil War re-enactors raise a smaller, square version of the flag nearby. It's the South Carolina Infantry Battle Flag, and it's on a 30-foot flagpole at the Confederate Soldier Monument directly in front of the Statehouse, along a busy streets.

The compromise says the flag can be lowered only with approval of the Legislature.

2001 — The NCAA says South Carolina can't hold any post-season sporting events whose locations are pre-determined as long as the flag flies.

January 2004: About 2,000 people march to the Statehouse on MLK Day, renewing calls for the flag's removal.

The nation was not focused on this no matter how many instances you want to list.

You sound like one of those bitter folks who were trying to drag MLK and Rosa Parks back in the 50's. There were thousands of people who said Rosa Parks just wanted attention, wanted to stir the pot, and what she did was stupid and pointless.

And obviously you can Google the stories about the NATIONAL debates and coverage from the early 2000s boycotts of the entire state over this issue yourself, but clearly you're just looking to play contrarian based off of your opinion about history and not facts laid out in front of you, so there really is no point in any further discussion as you've got your heels dug in deep.
