Uhm.. I worked in the food industry years ago and THAT was worse. I never worked in retail but y'all have it much easier than us for sure. We have to cook and clean and deal with complaints/refunds all of the time. But it taught me valuable customer service skills and how to handle unreasonable people so I'm a much better person because of it.
Not everyone can handle those kinds of jobs despite it paying so low.
I've never worked at retail but I've worked as a barista or a waiter before and I love it. Maybe it's because I like interacting with people? Idk.
As a barista specifically I'd work at this place that also served food and I would get insane amount of foods for free, didn't spend a dime for for in weeks
For the most part, I enjoyed working in retail. It is hard work because you're on your feet all day and some customers treat you like ****, but usually people are okay and I found it rewarding to help them around the store. I also enjoyed organising the store and having responsibility for the till. Depending on the company you work for, you also get nice benefits like staff discount which I think comes in handy.
I think you need to think about what your strengths are and what you expect from a job. For some people, changing to a 9 to 5 office job after retail is a blessing, but others end up hating the routine because it is pretty slow and boring compared to retail.
Retail is notorious for being a bad place to work. I worked at Abercrombie & Fitch, though, and it was actually fairly easy. But there, our managers told us to basically leave the customers alone unless they directly asked us for help.

OMG this sounds like a dream.
Where I work, my managers are always saying you should always approach customers and whatnot.
I work in retail but its for a small family owned business, so most of the customers are regulars and respect the management, of course i deal with assholes but its really only from time to time. My pay is great and I sit on my phone for a good part of the time. When I worked in food service at a crap amusement park was definitely worse.. the customers were awful and so were the people that worked there.
Ugh, I’ve worked retail and at many food places, retail is boring as **** and food services get the worsT customers. Just go to school and get away from both
