Animals are inefficient converters of energy from the plants they eat, I think the figure is around 10% of the energy they eat from plants is then passed on to us when we eat the meat. Where do you suppose this extra energy comes from?

The principles on which most people would deem bestiality unacceptable also make eating meat unacceptable - both are carnal pleasures gained at the expense of an animal. Sure, the activity itself is different, but if you were able to ask a cow if they'd rather be raped or murdered how do you suppose it would answer?

As you can see from the responses in this thread, no. If not even the fact that people are starving to death every day because first world countries 'need' their meat is enough to make a change, I don't know what would be.

Let's not act like the dairy and meat industry care about the norms. Animals still get tortured before they're slaughtered, sometimes even just for fun, and they are held under unbelievably cruel conditions in order to maximise profit.

Well, my country has the highest number of controls in Europe. It just doesn't happen here. And you can't force everyone into something innatural like avoiding eating meat.

You can prove what I'm saying by going to gym or doing exercise basis only on vegetarian diet and you can tell me how long you can handle it. I won't even discuss something so obvious, you can keep your food chains system receipts for yourself

absolute ********. the amount of space, food, water and time we use to rear one cow i GUARANTEE would provide much more in crops. something like one acre of land can provide tens of thousands of pounds of vegetables and yet could only give you a few hundred pounds of beef.

anyway, i doubt this would happen. people are too selfish.

eating meat may be natural but is intensive farming (i.e. what everyone will eventually have to resort to in order to accommodate a growing population that demands meat)? is it natural for a pig to have its young forcibly taken away from it, for it to be fed until its legs buckle and for it to have its throat cut open while still conscious?

you can argue that it's natural for animals to die at the behest of a predator, but the difference between animals in the wild and in the farm is that a farm animal has no control over whether it lives or dies.

just because people haven't always been vegetarian doesn't mean it's unnatural to not eat meat... everyone can live off vegetables and fruit. and live the same really, only healthier... people have ALWAYS eaten vegetables since the beginning of times, before they began hunting how do you think they fed? it's just as natural to eat meat as it is not to. I pretty much plan of giving up most meat once I get out of my parents house, I'll still eat eggs, milk, etc. sometimes fish or chicken.

Sorry but you're being naïve if you think a high number of controls prevents any kind of animal cruelty from happening.

We should because then people would realise that we are not natural meat eaters in this day and age. If we had to hunt animals for meat, kill them with our bare hands and eat the raw meat, we would not be able to do it.

it would be more ethical, but in our consumerist climate no one would want to do that.

As much as I love a big juicy hamburger I have to agree. The whole farming and domesticating is so last millennium. It's time to move on to a meatless future. I have read that there are laboratories creating artificial meat. I would gladly eat that instead of supporting huge factory farms.
