He only said he wouldn't defend against Gay marriage and didn't. The HoR defended against Gay marriage.

Obama is the first sitting president to voice support for gay marriage. Set up a framework for DADT and DOMA to be repealed and struck down. He advanced the cause and overnight increased support for gay marriage among the african american community.
