I literally just watched the episode of Scandal where a racist cop shot and killed a 17-year old black guy the cop stopped to interrogate for a shoplifting (he was carrying a box from a store) as the 17-year old was reaching in his pocket for something. The cop claimed he was pulling out a knife, and when the guy's dad who's been there since his son's death as well as this civil rights activist who was also at the crime scene, there was a knife underneath him and his father kept denying it was his. Turns out a (white) suspect for another crime and the cop made a deal to plant the knife on the guy. The guy was reaching for a receipt.
Not going to decide who's guilty here yet, but all of this police brutality IMO stems from distrust/racism on BOTH sides. Due to cops years ago being relentlessly racist, black people have little trust/respect for cops and therefore will refuse to cooperate, will run off, etc. In turn, cops, even if they don't mean to be racist, can easily have some internalized racism, so they could be profiling people based on race and could be more likely to panic when dealing with minorities. Making cops less jumpy around minorities and rooting out the racists is a good way to start reversing this.
Hope this guy recovers.
