When I first heard about the song, I thought it was probably some fun novelty thing that's just silly but enjoyable, but then I listened to the song and I really have no idea why it became so big. It's not catchy, and not even a case of "so bad it's good", it's just simply annoying.

It's the guy's annoying voice I think that made it populat. It's one of those songs where the person's voice is annoying, so much so that the song gets stuck in your head and doesn't leave; it's pop, but unconventional and weird enough that it gets the alternative label and picked up by people who like pop but don't want to admit they like traditional Top 40 pop.
