Which U.S. state has the best Universities?
Which state has the best/most prestigious Universities...lets stick more on the side of academics for this discussion rather than sports.

Probably New York and California if we are talking overall, which is not surprising considering their size...

California just by being the biggest and most populous state mostly.
The public UC system is extensive and Berkely, UCLA, UCSD are some of the nation's best. There's also the private institutions like Cal Arts, Cal Tech, Stanford, and USC.

Besides Cali and Massachusetts,I would definitely put in a vote for North Carolina. Not just because I'm biased and live here either.UNC (One of the FIRST public Universities in this country BTW), Duke, Wake Forest; the list goes on. Gorgeous tree lined campuses and a good mix of schools too.You can't really go wrong with the UNC system schools either (unless you chose the flop school I dropped out of)
Also Ohio's,Pennsylvania's, some of Georgia's, and Virginia's don't look too terrible.

California and Virginia have the best public university education systems in the US. If we're going by US News and World Report rankings or even Newsweek rankings or any college rankings, the schools that receive the most accolades in NY and Mass. are expensive, private schools, whereas in Cali, the mix of prestigious schools is both private and public (UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Stanford, Cal Tech, etc.) and in VA the top nationally ranked schools are public (UVA, W&M, VT, VCU, etc.).

Massachusetts.
I've read that the quality of unis in the Cal system has gone down in recent years due to budget cuts.
