Why are we saying he might be mentally ill? WHY are we making EXCUSES for him? Even if he is, that in no way absolves him of even a fraction of the guilt of murdering 9 people in cold blood because of race. Him being mentally ill or not is honestly besides the point until his sentencing hearing.
