If we should blame anybody behind the Halftime '04 scandal, it should be Justin Timberlake.

Janet stupidly ended her own career, but let's not pretend that her career demise had nothing to do with racism and sexism in America. Justin Timberlake went away unscathed. He deserved at least some commercial backlash from it. And Janet's sucky music didn't help either. It seemed like she lost all of her luster after Nipplegate. And nudity and strong sexuality are being more accepted now than ever. I always thought that people blew Nipplegate out of proportion.

And I think Janet is in a different position than Mariah and Madonna are in now. If D'Angelo - who is a much smaller act than Janet - can open with 100k, then Janet can do more with comeback hype. How she does after that would depend on the quality of the music and how long the comeback hype last.
