For an era like BTW, Gaga should have showed us a bit more of Stefani. The gimmicks made her annoying and people began to finally see the real Lady Gaga. BTW sold well and Gaga was still a huge force because of her name.
By the time ARTPOP came out no one cared about her the way they used to. The hype was gone, the good music was gone, and she didn't have an image to captivate anyone. The desperation was real this era as Gaga showed a very unlikable side of her (defensive meltdowns with her essays and Twitter rants). Was she responsible? In part, but she did have management to answer to...
I do believe Gaga has made a conscious effort to not play the role of a pop star the way she did during her debut. By all means, if Gaga wanted to work with Juicy J over a DJ Mustard clone of a song I am sure she could. I hope she sticks to her lane but executes it with the same pose and intelligence she once had and above all with good music.

Mmmmm you have an interesting theory but I don't buy
all of it. ARTPOP as far as the music quality goes overall is on par with The Fame sans not having a single as blasting as Poker Face/Paparazzi (and tbh its production exceeds it), but the difference between the two eras and what makes The Fame ultimately better is the fact that beyond the music she had a concept that was cool and interesting which she executed far better than whatever the concept of ARTPOP was. ARTPOP was a mess not because it didn't contain quality Top 40 material but because wtf was she
doing with it?
Shes never stopped making good pop music. But with The Fame/Monster she seemed to fully embrace being a Top 40 entity and with Born This Way/ARTPOP its like she wanted to find this balance between being eccentric + outlandish but also incredibly commercial and marketable. Its a balance she didn't master and thus both albums didn't sit with people the way her first 2 did.
I know ATRL tries to make her seem like such a failure or whatever, but Lady Gaga is still one of the biggest names in pop music. Thats just inarguable. Even with her first 2 albums shes been too divisive to
always come out on top, there was no certainty she wouldve smashed with The Fame, it just happened at the right moment with the right concept. If she comes correct with an album she'll reclaim credibility. But I don't think shes ever truly been
gone.
