Discussion: Is Transgenderism the 2015's FAD?

Ever since Caitlyn Jenner, transgenderism has been a huge thing this year after it was pretty much ignored in the past despite the gay rights movement picking up steam.

In Big Brother, we have Audrey as a transgendered.

The cast for the Amazing Race Canada just came out and we have another transgendered.

Hamilton on the left is transgendered.

Will all shows now typecast a transgendered individual? Will this be a fad that goes away next year?

Before Caitlyn, there was ZERO transgenders on The Amazing Race, Survivor, Big Brother or most reality shows now they're the "in" thing. They're mainly doing this in order to get buzz, but I feel like it's being disingenuous since they should have had some in the past.

I fear that they will portray or edit them negatively, rather they just edit them as the person they are. These shows should not be considered as a form of activism, that's like saying that Frankie Grande being on Big Brother was a push in the right direction for the gay community. I'm glad transgenderism is in the forefront and hope that they get the equal treatment like everyone else. I'm just worried that the media is abusing the label and exploiting it for their own personal gain, which can cause negative attention on the transgendered community.

But this is literally all today. There's also rumors that the next American Amazing Race is going to cast a transgendered team.

It's not an ignorant question - the media treats social issues as fads once they are trendy. That's what potentially is going to happen with transgenderism this year as Caitlyn Jenner is hands-down one of the biggest topics this year.

However, the good thing is there is the potential for networks to find encouragement in including more varieties of LGBTs and POCs as it generates more discussion. Diversity is always a good thing to encourage by any means necessary, be it as a fad or otherwise.

People pay it a lot of dust, but The Real World was always ahead of the pack in terms of highlighting social issues.

Being transgendered is not a "fad" and it's offensive to even suggest so if offensive, as fad has a negative connotation. These people's stories and lives aren't like the beanie baby craze or Lady Gaga. These are real, genuine people garnering acceptance in media for the first time in a long time.

Through VISIBILITY, people are becoming more aware and accepting of trans men and women. Laverne Cox rose to fame 2 years ago and through her portrayal on a hit TV show has forced the media to notice her. Carmen Carrera and Janet Mock have also rose to fame as trans models. Not to mention, Jared Leto won an Academy Award for playing a trans woman in last year's Dallas Buyer's Club.

Along with those, Bruce Jenner's big interview and the reveal of Caitlyn has proven to media, networks and publishers that trans personalities are marketable stories to share and thus profit off of. It's the general public's interest and acceptance that is forcing moguls and big wigs of companies (primarily cis, white old, rich men) to showcase a demographic of people that have been both ignored and excluded in the media.
