"Miley is this generation’s Madonna" - The Guardian
Canny and confrontational, Miley Cyrus is this generation’s Madonna.
On Miley's Paper Magazine spread:
Quote:
She doesn’t look coy, or vulnerable. She looks like she’s having a party. She’s taking the 90s Madonna approach to public sexuality: it’s deliberately provocative, and crucially, it is not being served up for male consumption.
|
On her pop colleagues:
Quote:
We’re so used to pop stars becoming blank and bland to reach the widest possible audiences – it’s no surprise that the most beige singer to blight the name of soul, Sam Smith, is doing so well – that it’s a joy to see someone kicking against those unwritten rules.
|

On her career choices:
Quote:
She’s also clearly smart, and canny, and it takes some chutzpah to discuss sexuality so frankly, and as not a big deal. She may not have the associated songcraft of, say, Pharrell or Beyoncé (though We Won’t Stop and Wrecking Ball are indeed Bangerz) but legend has it that the best punks could barely scrape three chords together, so she’s in very good company.

Interesting !.

They also mentioned Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato, by the way .

Kii, I guess the ATRL myth has been debunked ? (mess @ " We Won't Stop", though ).

Eh... Maybe the younger version of modern Madonna in terms of behavior, but other than that, I don't see it.

I'be been saying she's the new Madonna for years but no one believes me. Being enlightened is truly an isolating curse. I should make an album with Lady Gaga and call it ARTCOCK.
EDIT: SCREAMING at the Beyoncé songcrafting skills. was that ironic or something? I fear it's not and that's scary.

While I appreciate Miley and her similarities to a woman with whom every single living pop star shares similarities, Miley quite noticeably lacks the commercial appeal, business savvy, and socio-political musical messages of Madonna.
I don't think that it's accurate to make this comparison - she's not the only feminist figure in pop music, she's not the most successful like Madonna was, and her music seems to be more watered-down. Come back in 5 years.

It's not that hard to see similarities, people always forget that Miley has been on the game for a long time already and how succesful she is not mention she has already reinvented herself multiple times already.

I guess, in the way that she doesn't care about what people think and pushes boundaries, but she lacks creativity. Don't just be controversial for the sake of being controversial, at least show off your talent and be good, otherwise it comes off as phony and try hard. If Miley sings and performs her butt off idgaf if she's naked or snorting crack or humping a dude/chick or whatever else she likes to do this hippie era. She can cement her legacy if she does that because she has a nice voice, has the fan base and nostalgia factor, and has charisma but if she continues what she's doing people are going to see her as a joke
Lady Gaga was more of a Madonna back in the day. I actually liked her more because Madonna is annoying

Madonna is only relevent not because she was sexually provocative but because she was the best selling female artist of her (and all) time. At her peak, Madonna was massively global in singles, albums and stadium tours and bigger than all other artists except MJ. Janet ran her close over some years though. Miley is nowhere near that position in this generation of pop stars. Stripping near naked for a magazine does not make her this generation's Madonna.

But she's only 22! This is her Like A Virgin era! And her Flaming Lips / Lana Del Rey influenced album is coming, hunny !. I agree with everything else you've said, though! She has all the elements to become even bigger, she just needs to #GETITRIGHT !.

Times (and album sales!) have changed, sis! And not everyone can be Taylor Swift !.
Now that GaGa's an international jazz superstar, Rihanna's an indie artist, Britney's doing Vegas, Katy is 30 and Ke$ha is nowhere to be seen it's only fair to give the title to Miley (4/5 of Taylor's albums are country so she doesn't count )!.

Don't forget Taylor!
It's because Madonna set up the blueprint for a performing self expressive pop star. It's inevitable that they will all be called "the next Madonna" after they fit that blueprint.

Madonna released her first album at like, age 25.
Miley started her career at age 11 and is 22 years old today. I think Miley is doing plenty of good for someone of her age.
