The second comment is right. It's not God that tests since he already knows your strengths and weaknesses. It's Satan that does but only with the permission of God, as revealed in the Book of Job.
This is true but people should have known what she meant though. It's the thought that counts. She's thankful for the trials she's endured because it made her stronger. That's what matters.
