The first time Taylor Swift walked into Heinz Field, in 2006, she was a 16-year-old singing the national anthem for a Steelers-Bengals game. She didn't even have an album out yet, just the single "Tim McGraw," so if a hundred people there knew who she was, that's a shock.
Five years later the girl from the suburbs of Reading, Pa., did something unprecedented: She went back to headline the stadium, something only a handful of elite artists have done, and certainly no female ones.
Eric Church, who played Heinz Field last week with eight-time headliner Kenny Chesney, recently told Rolling Stone, "If you look at her career, she's in a space that, historically, I don't know that anybody's ever been in. Everybody always compares her to Madonna, but I don't know, man. Madonna at 25, was she at this spot? No, I don't think so ..."
Not even close. At 25, Madonna was releasing her first album (1983) and was almost 27 when she headlined the Civic Arena. She's only a stadium player in a few major cities.
Ms. Swift will headline Heinz Field for the third time Saturday on a tour supporting "1989," a fifth album that had her continuing to shake off any inkling of having been a country artist. She's not only firmly in the pop club now with Madonna, Beyonce, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, she's outselling and outdrawing them while earning respect in unlikely places.
Neil Young called her "a great writer." Ryan Adams said she was one of the "most [expletive] amazing writers I've ever seen." Dave Grohl recently said, "I'm officially obsessed -- she might want to get a restraining order."
Part of her appeal is the songs: the lovelorn teenage princess, the vicious breakup ones, and now the frothy dance-pop workouts. She's also a supremely confident live performer. While most current hitmakers rely on tightly choreographed shows that resemble video shoots, Ms. Swift can do that but also command a stadium alone with a banjo or ukelele.
