Comic books are a medium, and they do not all need to be aimed at one age group. There are comics which cater to a young demographic, and others aimed at older audiences.
The Midnighter probably lies in the latter category.

I disagree that marriage = a happily ever after (and hence an end to the story) however. If Spiderman's story continued perfectly fine 2 decades after he got married to Mary Jane (before One More Day) then there's really no excuse.
