Another factor when transitioning is the "extreme amount of anxiety" that can arise when dealing with potentially unsupportive people, says McNorgan.

In 2011, a study by a U.S. group looking into transgender issues found that of its 6,450 respondents 55 per cent said their family relationships were weaker after coming out. Forty per cent reported at least one family member "chose not to speak or spend time" with them afterwards.

The 2015 Canadian Trans Youth Health Survey by the University of British Columbia surveyed more than 900 transgender youth and found that more than one third of 14 to 25 year olds had attempted to kill themselves at least once.

In the U.S. survey, respondents were nearly four times more likely than the general population to live in a household bringing in less than $10,000 US annually and were twice as likely to be unemployed.

Some landlords will reject transgender applicants and some doctors will refuse to treat transgender patients, Hixson-Vulpe says.

"There's no less a mental toll on [her] than there is on anybody that goes through this," says McNorgan. "It's the hardest thing that you ever do."

"It takes a lot of guts for somebody in a position like she's in to do this," she adds. Jenner's "life is right there for everyone to see."

But as Jenner and other celebrities publicly come out, it makes it "less difficult" for others, she says.

"I would have been tarred and feathered if I did this in the '50s," she says of her transition. "The only way that it's going to get better for trans people is for information to get out there and for people to tell their stories."

It may not be representative but it's helping get support and knowledge on transgender people out there so that discrimination doesn't happen as much anymore.

I'm confused because I thought she was going to criticize Caitlyn? I feel like what was said is common sense because Caitlyn only got the normal privilege that any celeb does doing anything.

I remember when I joined there were so many arguments about whether or not the government should subsidise transpeople's transitions and I still don't know how to feel about it. I don't like to think of myself as transphobic. I try not to be. But there just seem to be so many more issues that I feel need to be dealt with first, like homelessness, poverty, life-threatening illnesses - and I know someone's going to hop on my reply button saying "not being able to transition is a life-threatening illness because it's a potential suicide for someone who's severely depressed," but I'm talking about people who need treatment for terminal cancer.

Is there a transpeople transition charity? There should be. Like-minded individuals and LGBT supporters could donate to help transpeople afford all their surgeries. But I just feel like when there's so many other problems in society, and most of our countries are in a severe amount of debt, I don't really know how many people would approve of some individuals receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars for plastic surgery from their tax money. Even if it isn't necessarily an "elective" surgery considering they didn't ask to be born trans.

It's a really complicated issue tbh.

I honestly don't believe Caitlyn is going to be the catalyst for change in people's view on transgendered people. To be honest, I think most of the support comes from the fact that he's a famous Olympian with famous kids and a famous ex wife and even more famous step daughters. At the moment he's the hot topic and media is all over him, when the dust settles we'll see if people are more tolerant or less discriminatory. As of now I think a lot of the support is coming from the fact that he's famous but a lot of people will still look down on the trans kids on the street etc etc. that's just my opinion though, I do hope he can bring awareness and shed light on a community that's very oppressed and mistreated.
