There are bands like Stained, Papa Roach, Disturbed, Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold, and Three Days Grace that are too hard to call Rock but they're also not quite hard enough to call metal. Halestorm is a great female led example. Rage Against The Machine fits in there, Skillet (Christian Band), Stone Sour, (though Slipknot may make the Metal cut), Volbeat, Breaking Benjamin, Pop Evil, Chevelle, and I know there are others I just can't think of right now. I've seen Shinedown put there with these bands, but that may be stretching it a bit. Generally, most of these bands are my favorite music, which occupies that space to the right of Rock, but also to the left of Metal. I do like Metallica from old to new, though I acknowledge by the mid 1990s most of their music fit in the above void where no term applies quite right.

I don't get how the title of the article is true, Doesn't this only really mean that metal is the genre with the most loyal listeners? Or maybe the most popular genre among people that only listen to one genre?

I mean, I like metal enough, but I just don't see it being the most popular and the last sentence of the article seems to even contradict that it is the most popular

Active Rock and Metal are really the only two formats that have so far mostly avoided the influx of electronic percussion.

Even Country and Alternative Rock uses a lot of the electronic drums and pumped up deep bass lines now, so that almost all stations except Active Rock affiliates play songs with Urban/Hip-Hop/EDM rhythmic backdrops.

Unfortunately, Active Rock/Metal songs/bands/albums are streamed and downloaded less than almost every other format, which means these acts make the labels less money, and fewer new Active Rock/Metal bands are awarded music contracts.

Also, many Active Rock affiliates are forced to either flip formats or add increasing amounts of Alternative and Classic Rock to stay afloat. Those of us who like this music must do our part and download/stream these albums/bands/songs so these formats not only survive but thrive.

Common sense tells you it's because atrl is a pop forum.
