It is a shame that thread is now closed. I would have helped you out.
Adele is never gonna emulate the success of 21. Not even MJ emulated Thriller's levels of sales. The BeeGees never matched the success of Saturday Night Fever.
In the 90s, Alanis Morrisette also had a monster album in Jagged Little Pill. It is certified 16 Platinum in the US and Alanis was the youngest artist to win AOTY at the Grammys (subsequently Taylor took that record). Then she released her follow up album a few years later and was never able to recapture the previous level of success or even close to it.
I am not saying that will happen to Adele, but it certainly is a possibility. Lady Gaga is a recent example of how difficult it actually is to sustain your level of success and how quickly you can decline in sales. Gaga can come back, but the point is after Artpop she needs to.
Taylor showing longevity and sustained and even increased popularity after almost a decade of slayage, is testament to her ability to create great albums and nurture a supportive fanbase.
Adele has not demonstrated that longevity as of yet and has not proved that she is not another Alanis flash-in-the-pan phenomenon. I love Adele and hope she continues to do really well, but she will be approaching her next album from a different emotional mindspace and the hiatus is not gonna help her. She we will have to see what happens. Massive success is not guaranteed at all.
