The fourth track on Cher's Love Hurts album, Fires of Eden is an 80s-esque rock ode to regaining a long-lost but not forgotten lover. Despite the physical miles between them, their love is still intact, hovering just below the surface of the mind, ready to be "ignited". This song presents a give-and-take of love; the verses display Cher's emotional vulnerability and fear that she will not be able to rekindle her love after so long a time while the chorus celebrates the deep-seated passion that time cannot erode:
"Remember when love was innocent
There was still be better times
But you know those fires of Eden
Still burn in this heart of mine"
The fourth European single from Cher's 1991 Love Hurts album, "Could've Been You" is a cover of the Bob Halligan song of the same name (from Halligan's 1991 Window in the Wall record). It peaked at #31 on the U.K. Singles Chart and #75 on the German Singles Chart. The song serves as a message to an ex-lover seeking reconciliation. While she bemoans the loss of the relationship in the first verse, Cher isn't sad because she's found another boy. She coyly shows off her new man, telling her ex that
"When you see the smile on his face,
Just remember, baby,
Could've been you".
This is one of my personal favourites by her, actually the album itself is one of my favourites by her.
Hm. Next Cher album will be Sunday. I'm torn between Chastity (hate it, but it's interesting) and Prisoner (hate it because I don't own a physical copy).
Lemme just wait until April for the next album of the month. Tbh I am living performance art replicating Cher. Right now I'm doing the part where she waits 5 years to build her film career.
