Aren't eighth graders about 14 years old? Why wouldn't they know what a dictatorship is?
The American education system really confuses me... how can a country produce so many great intellectuals with such crappy schooling and so much apparent ignorance? I suppose it's a matter of sheer numbers. There are bound to be a few smarties in there.
I don't know, when I was in eighth grade I was taking Civics (US) as a social studies course and in 9th grade is when I took world history and learned about other forms of government like dictatorships...and I certainly didn't know anything about Canada dd. But that's just me
That is exactly the situation and our problem. China on sheer numbers is cranking out more physicist then we can. Our only saving grace is a lot of smart people want to move here because honestly would you want to live in China or California?
I have worked with physicists, engineers and programmers from India, China and Russia on various projects over the years. When they get here I ask them are you going home or just getting some experience for a few years and heading back? They all said they were going back home and I was like mhmm we shall see about that. A year later none of these guys were ever moving back.
The best story is this India guy right off the plane is sitting on a snow bank outside the Ford offices and I pulled up and parked next to him. I ask him if he is okay and he said he just wanted to die it was so cold. I looked at him and laughed I said buddy it's 30 degrees out you don't know what cold is. Even this guy stayed in Michigan got married and had kids he isn't going back.
The nice parts of China are nicer than most of the USA.
I don't know how this is possible -- eighth grade (at least here in PA) is when the Holocaust is taught, which required a look into the Axis powers and (inevitably) dictatorships. Nt everyone will grasp the concept, but considering how the US has /always/ handled dictatorships, they should know that the US doesn't want to be near them (look at the embargo on Cuba, for example...)
