New Yorkers can seem like they are being mean because they have to put up with everyone's BS from around the globe on a daily. You should see the way tourists behave when they are in NYC...
Actually... not really. There are rude and nasty people like EVERYWHERE in the world but that's normal. You'll meet rude and nice people everywhere you go to. I grew up in Mexico and let me tell you over there they are ruder than here. Here in the US you'll see people saying hi to you, good morning, smiling, apologizing, saying excuse me and stuff like that....of course like I said not everyone is like this tho.
I feel like Americans are friendly and warm. Haven't met too many Americans though (Gaga and Lana were nice obviously ) but from what I've heard and seen, they seem pretty friendly and not like afraid to talk to people, unlike how we are here in Norway.
