Metal = subgenre of rock
And not when Linkin Park, hun, is metal too, nu metal lol
I think that metal has enough distance from rock that it could be considered its own distinct genre at this point.
I do also think that Linkin Park would fall more on the rock side of things. They don't seem to have the metal musician's focus on atmosphere, and while Linkin Park are heavier than the traditional rock group, they also maintain a lot of traditional rock's structure. I think it would be fair to call Linkin Park rock especially since nu metal is more of a derogatory term invented to describe the rap-rock of the early 00s.

Edit: Also, LP are still great.
Linkin Park definitely are a metal band, the albums they are most well known for (Hybrid Theory and Meteora) are nu metal albums, even tho they used also back then the (as you called it) "rock structure". Most nu metal bands I know wander into alt rock/hard rock territory anyway. Nu metal is more melodic, it evolved from alt rock and sometimes (not always) the difference between nu metal and alt rock is in the songs "heavyness". It was like that with Linkin Park - they softened their sound a little bit without drastically changing their style, and voila, they made an alt rock album.
You dont have to exclusively do the genre to be a part of it anyway. None of the metal bands I know, or the ones described as metal by the poster I replied to make exclusively metal.
Let me clear this up. Yes, Linkin Park are THE greatest rock band of this century! I mean the fact they rock the music world with their first two albums-which sold a lot and by a lot, I mean a whole lots. It was too glorious. The fact they still have a huge fanbase even though they are a broken base with some preferring their nu-metal classics while others are fine with their revamped style. Still, a dedicated fanbase. Still selling a good amount of units. They can go alternative and experiment their sound, but at the end of the day, they are still doing the music they feel like doing and not catering into commercial success or Top 40 and the fans still loved them. But, hey. Some people love to drag them down for some reason.
Imagine Dragons might be the second coming. You all know, but don’t want to hear and love to pull “They’re not rock!” excuse. But, of course people saying the Kings of Alternative Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, Evanescence, My Chemical Romance, Tame Impala, Green Day, The Offspring, Incubus, Nickelback (the internet and rock purists hate them tho!), Korn (a certain ex-mod, current administrator would say this), System Of A Down, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica (They’re a rock band too since they are metal), Slayer, The Killers, Coldplay, Limp Bizkit, Kings of Leon, Three Days Grace, U2 (that iTunes Fiasco tho.), and much more that I can’t think of this moment are the greatest are not wrong to think this, but that’s your opinion. I even accept Maroon 5 as an answer even though, they basically gone full pop at this point and just the Adam Levine show. Anyone saying One Direction and One Direction clone with guitars are either trolls or stupid pop stans. You all cool saying what kind rock bands you're into and what kind of rock fan you guys are. Not surprising since its ATRL. I love many kinds of rock. It’s all good.
