The tradeoff is worth it since the 256GB SSD is so fast and reliable. You can get a larger one if you want but I like the way I'm doing it now. I have no need to keep 10GB movie files on my SSD when I'm not using them and the occasional file cleanup leaves me never running out of space on my SSD.

I personally wouldn't give so much money for a laptop and a HDD. If you own iPhone and iPad though the integration between the said devices maybe worth it.
You can't play games as easily on the macbook as on Windows too. I'm not sure how the vlc performs on iOS.

If you mean OSX, VLC runs just as it would on a Windows machine. In fact, VLC's Mac interface is nicer imo.

The Pro's have more RAM + better processors inside so those would be better for even basic use like this; you'll have to spend more to get more hard drive space though. I have the Mid-2012 one they still sell and it's great tbh (the only program that is a constant **** up is Skype).
