On May 22nd, the people of the Republic Of Ireland will vote to add the following to Article 41
of the Constitution:
"Marriage may be contracted in
accordance with law by two persons
without distinction as to their sex."
Back in February, the Cabinet approved a Bill allowing adoption by same-sex couples and changes to the Surrogacy legislation got a go-ahead from Cabinet. This is a big deal for Ireland, if the Marriage Equality Referendum does not pass, same sex couples will still be able to adopt and hopefully avail of surrogacy.
Both the Yes Side and the No Side have come out in full force to express their views and opinions. Recently the man and woman featured in posters opposing the same sex marriage referendum denounced the use of their stock image and say they support “completely” the proposed change to the Constitution.
It's a close race between the Yes and No side and personally I think the outcome is unpredictable. I hope the LGBT community get the equal rights they deserve but we will have to wait until May 23rd for the result.
Do you think it will Pass?
