Critics are #TeamTaylor. If Katy had released 1989, she'd have gotten between the 50-60 range on Metacritic, like Teenage Dream. Truthfully, the album is worth a 60-70 range score. Whereas in reality, Taylor's name allowed it to get 76. It's not worth 1 point less than Red (which is on the whole a great record), it's just not.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that most (not all) of Katy's music is just fun, carefree and non button pushing, whereas most of the time with Taylor songs like that are a rare outlier. Mainly her singles. But she also has some lyrically beautiful songs like All Too Well and State of Grace which I think the critics applaud.
