I think the difference is that they leave unannounced. People don't just leave (for 3 days) unannounced therefore we're inclined to believe that they could've become a victim of something. If someone knows you're going then they're less likely to worry, in the same sense that if some is expected to arrive home but don't (for 3 days) you're going to worry.
I'd rather my family send a search party for me if I randomly disappear for 3 days than to just wait for my return. A gurl could be kidnapped in a bunker somewhere.
