News: GOP rep tries to link Baltimore unrest to gay marriage

Mr. Perkins argued that the government is “the last stop to fix problems,” and that the major issues today can be traced back to “the breakdown of the family, which the redefinition of would only accelerate.”

Mr. Flores, the chairman of the conservative House Republican Study Committee, emphatically agreed.

“Let’s talk about poverty for instance,” he said. “The single best indicator of whether or not a child is going to be in poverty or not is whether or not they were raised by a two-parent household or a single-parent household. And so the breakdown of the family has contributed to poverty.”

“You look at what’s going on in Baltimore today, you know, you see the issues that are raised there,” Mr. Flores continued. “And healthy marriages are the ones between a man and a woman because they can have a healthy family and they can raise children in the way that’s best for their future, not only socially but psychologically, economically, from a health perspective. There’s just nothing like traditional marriage that does that for a child. Each of us has a mother and a father, and there’s just no way to get around that.”

Although he is an idiot trying to tie it to gay marriage he isn't wrong about the break down of the traditional family unit. A single parent is not going to be able to work and keep an eye on the kids as well as a two parent household. If they are lucky they have support from other family members.

Didn't you see the video of the single mom smacking the crap out of her teen boy for throwing rocks at the police? The Data has been consistent Baltimore has a 60% or higher children in single parent homes compared to Maryland sitting around 34%. I will give you a link to the data sets I'm not making up numbers like you are, I'm 100% sure.

Thank you, I failed to include the single parents houses in my statements too. Indeed a very unfortunate situation some children and families find themselves into.

I wasn't trying to sound like a known-it-all when I said "I'm 100% sure," it was just more of a rebuttal to this guy's insistence on trying to tie everything to same-sex couples marrying.

It's all good I'm on edge the past few days since I quit smoking and I'm snapping a bit at people.

As I said before he is an idiot and but I believe children have a much better chance with 2 parents watching over them and keeping them on track. I don't care what the parents are 2 dads, moms, mom and dad. The family unit is eroding it has been since the 90's probably 80's. I am a Conservative and trust me I wish they would let go of these social issues and worry more about fixing our country that is literally falling apart around us.
