Discussion: Question for LGBT POC

both LGBT and POC are oppressed minorities and face difficulties that Straight Cis White don't have to but its even harder when you're both LGBT and A person of color. So i was wondering which do you find harder to be LGBT or POC based on your own personal experiences?

Depends on where you live.

I live in a place with one of the hugest gay populations in the country and also a huge black population so both have moments but they're very rare.

However I'll go with being gay in my case. Being gay here is MUCH easier then average because they're everywhere (my high school has over 30 gays alone), however there's still that homophobic bunch of ignorant bunch. It's hard to experience much racism when you're around majority blacks.

That said when in real world when getting jobs, and generally trying to do things being black will hold me back more so likely than being gay especially when most people don't realize I am.

I can pass as being totally white so LGBT. But when people *do* find out, I would say POC. Especially when it comes to career-related things, because the circles I move in (or try to move in) are usually very white and, in my experience, there's a subconsicous desire to keep it that way or a tendency to.

About being gay: I've never had any problem with it (the perk of living in Toronto). the worst thing was given some look because of rainbow or drag queen t-shirts, but I never gave a **** to those people anyway

About being poc: some job applications denied - which is a good thing because I don't wanna work for a racist boss anyway, being turned down by other gays - which is also a good thing because I don't have to deal with racist assholes

overall, for me and myself only, being poc sucks more than being gay

In my personal experience (which is not to say others have it the same way), it's being POC. I haven't really met anyone who's had a problem with me being bisexual.

But being black...where do I even begin?

that's exactly what i said? I'm not asking people which one has it worse i'm asking which aspect of their identity do they find to be more difficult based on their own person experience. I'm gay and Latino and find being gay a lot more difficult so i was courious about what others have to say.

LGBT for me. Although, I'm light-skinned enough that I don't face nearly as many challenges as some others.

Right now that race relations are extremely tense, I'm mainly avoiding the conversation, for the most part.

I imagine though that it is much harder for many being POC. I'm still trying to gain understanding about their experiences.

Someone on twitter asked if the black community would be fighting this hard if a flamboyant gay black man was unjustly killed by a police officer a la Freddie Gray, and I really didn't know how to answer.

It makes a challenge to stand on the frontlines with other black folks knowing they probably wouldn't bother to fight for me because of their quips with homosexuality.

Actually I will say both, alot of people have issues with both gays and POC and I get a portion of hate from both sides. I would not change a DAMN thing tho. im gonna be as gay and as Hispanic as I want and NOBODYs gonna stop me.
