Katy Perry has worn some much racier outfits in her time than this gold sparkly gown, adorned with sunflowers.
But the singer sparked controversy when she wore the dress, along with a Taiwanese flag as a cape, during her recent concert in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan.
Many took Katy’s outfit to be a political statement – whether or not she intended it to be – as sunflowers were the emblem of the Sunflower Student Movement of spring 2014, protesting a Chinese trade agreement that many saw as unfair to Taiwan.
The flag is also controversial as it wasn’t included in the 2012 Olympic Games.
“I don’t speak Mandarin, I’m sorry, that’s what you speak right? Taiwanese maybe? I feel like somebody has to teach me a little bit.”
She then invited an audience member up on stage to teach her how to say, ‘Hello’, ‘Thank you’, ‘I love you’, and ‘Selfie’.
The relationship between Taiwan (Republic of China) and China (People’s Republic of China) is complicated. While some see Taiwan as an independent nation, many – including the United States – have formally adopted the “One China” policy, which adheres to the People’s Republic of China’s position that it is the sole legitimate government.
