Well I can't speak for the US but Nicki was definitely getting lots of airplay here before Super Bass even happened. Moment 4 Life was how I found out about Nicki (well, not really, it was way before that, but regardless), as it was on the radio a lot here.

I actually heard about Selena covering the song first before I heard about Taylor covering it.

PF had sold a good 1.5M before Super Bass, and M4L had an AI of over 80M with a bunch of Pop airplay. People knew who Nicki was then lol.
