I don't think people realize how terrible the gaming community is. Gamergate was a movement to stop feminism in journalism and "protect" video game journalism. They threatened to rape prominent females and shoot up a school over it. The modern KKK, tbh.

This. But also I think it's unfair to paint the entire gaming/tech community with one brush. Because as you can see, there are many people coming out of the woodworks to show support now (too little too late unfortunately). Gamergate was terrible, but it was organized by a small subsection of the gaming community. The longer it went on, the more gamers started to withdraw their support as they realized that it was based out of hate and misogyny.
If anything good comes out of this tragedy, I hope this at least brings light to the homophobia, transphobia, racism, misogyny and all around bigotry that is tucked away beneath the surface of game and tech culture. It really is a BIG problem but since games are generally passed off as "being for kids and nerds" people tend to ignore it. That causes problems because it leaves people to stew in their own hate. It's like putting a bunch of racists on an island. Those disgusting mindsets just grow and fester with their own kind until it comes to the surface like this.
It's a shame these bullies caused her to take her life. She would have been (and was) such a valuable asset to the gaming community. If there's anything video games need, it's more diversity outside of the straight, cis, white male archetype.
