Every so often a pop girl comes with a single and video that changes the paradigm of pop. That truly THREATENS careers and makes everyone else step their game up, or forces people to change.
One of those videos that you look and you go "OH ****!". That you just KNOW a superstar has been born and others are going to be playing catch up.
Some threats of recent times:
A threat to the late 90s girls doing their RnB/adult contemporary music. A year after this, everyone had to be uptempo and bright and had to fit in with the bubblegum trend.
A threat to all the other Latin girls trying to get that crossover (careers WERE ended!)
A threat to all the RnB girls. Careers were decimated.
A threat to all the pop girls. Credit where its due.
Who was the last THREAT? Who was the last girl to come out with a KILLER song/video that that really made others quiver and made pop revolve around them? And who did she threaten?
Britney didn't start the bubblegum trend, hello Spice Girls
For solo female artists she did. Spice Girls smashed in 1996/1997 but up until Britney came out all the solo girls were doing mostly RnB and adult contemporary music. None were doing bubblegum until Britney.
Rolling In the Deep totally changed pop music for the 2010s and represents the beginning of the shift from dancepop to the current minimalist sound prevalent from 2012-present.

Solo/group the sound was there. Britney even copied their catchy piano intro

.
Set Fire to the Rain was the last non lead single to top the Hot 100 with a music video
Lana hasn't had that one song that totally shakes up the music industry, though. Each of the OP songs were colossal hits + RITD, as mentioned in my previous post.
She's certainly iconic and hugely influential in the 2010s, but I don't think she's been a THREAT like GB is implying.
I can't really think of any? ADELE doesn't really count imo. She just happened to sell a lot of albums a la Dido or Norah. Nobody's career really ended bc of her and not many artists were trying to be like her or marketed like her like the artists in the OP. Yeah, she was the bridge between the dance-pop phase and what the radio/charts are now but her style of music or image wasn't anything people felt they HAD to do to keep up. idk

The sound was there, in GROUPS. Doesn't mean Britney wasn't a huge threat to all the girls of the time. Just look at the charts before ...Baby One More Time:
There's European dance music inspired (Together Again, Ray of Light, Believe), but no bubblegum pop. It's mostly adult contemporary pop and RnB. It wasn't a thing among solo female artists before Britney and ATRL needs to understand this.
