How come the love and attention for Princess Diana extended even beyond the borders of the UK?
How come a tribute single for her went on to become the biggest selling song in the world with 33 million + copies sold?
How come Mother Teresa, who died around the same time, who died 5 days later, couldn't garner the same fuss and dramatics over her death despite the fact she made much more of a difference?
For a while, Diana was the most famous person in the world. And not just in English-speaking countries.
She did a lot for charity and she waa very 'real', unlike a lot of the royals who maintain airs and graces at all times. Saying that, she wouldn't be looked back upon so fondly if she hadn't died in such unfavourable circumstances, I don't think.
Re: Mother Theresa ... the whole thing was kind of a fraud and her houses for the poor and sickly were places with no doctors that people went to die...it was all exposed after she died.
She pushed boundaries and exposed the monarchy. She did it with class and unfortunately didn't make it out alive. There is a lot of mystery still attached to her name and if you dig a little deeper, you might discover things that will scar your soul forever. She, like Marilyn Monroe, passed away at the age of 36 and there are so many conspiracies about what led to her eventual fate.
She kind of made the Royal family more...modern and human. She was young, pretty and married a prince. A modern fairytale come true even if Prince Charming had his eyes on someone else. Everyone lived their fairy-tale through her.
She had guts. Not a lot of people would go up against the Royals like she did.
Her charity work - she did a lot of it and whilst some would argue she manipulated the media, she did a lot that was unheard of. Even something as simple as holding a child with HIV in a time when people were still ignorant about it. She was genuine. She was the Angelina Jolie of that time.
She seemed really empathetic. Young girls admired her beauty. This quote says it best:
"She was basically the first royal anyone could remember who behaved like a person rather than a distant blue-blood who met people out of obligation rather than affection."
But I think her death had a lot to do with it too. Let's not forget she was scrutinized by the press a lot (who eventually killed her) for her string of alledged affairs and exposure of the royals etc. And then she died young in tragic circumstances leaving two boys behind which turned her image around.
Her life story, magnetism and fragility. She was and will always be the Princess of the people. Furthermore, there was a motherly and nurturing aspect to her (she was voted nicest kid while in school and worked in a kindergarden before marrying Charles) that really marked the public.
PS/ Her death definitely swept away the latent negativity around her because people never know what they've got til its gone.
