Discussion: Is Rihanna's era done hit-wise?

It's very very rare for a pop album to have a song beyond the 3rd single be the biggest hit from the era. It has not happened ever, actually, as far as I know.

Does this mean no song Rihanna releases from now on will be bigger than 45S? So no smashes this era?

The logic is the following: pop albums (R8 is a pop album, let's not) are designed to SELL and they need hits to do that. They always release the smashes within the first three singles because otherwise the album will lose too much momentum.

If they had another huge hit in waiting, they'd have released it as either the lead or the third single (since BBHMM was the urban single), it wouldn't make sense not to.

Don't Stop The Music, Rude Boy and S&M were all the 4th singles of their respective albums and Where Have You Been was the 5th Single from TTT (The 2nd highest peaking single of the Era), so I 'm not really sure where you're going with this. Especially when it comes to Rihanna.

Also AO2 is far from over, it was literally sent to radio yesterday. The benefit of having a video is for people to check it out once they hear the music, thus interesting them into buying the song and giving the artist streaming views. I have no idea why the majority of the Navy and ATRL are calling it a flop, I mean Jesus H Christ give it more than 8 days.

I would give her one more single to see what she's doing. But if that flops, then it's done yes.

Did you read the OP? I said that the BIGGEST hit from a pop album is never past the third single. Which means that any singles released from now will likely be less successful than 45S, the most successful song released within the first 3 singles. Don't Stop the Music was not bigger than Umbrella. S&M was not bigger than Only Girl. Where Have You Been was not bigger than We Found Love.

And Rude Boy was the third single from Rated R....Russian Roulette --> Hard --> Rude Boy. What am I missing?

I'm hearing BBHMM all over the radio now, and FFS was big on radio here for a couple months. Either BBHMM will rise and block AO, or AO will be a slow grower. Who knows. I love Rihanna, but she is known for her hot mess release schedule.

Keep in mind with LOUD, OG went #1 AFTER WMN went #1.

But the album isn't out, you don't think that hit worthy new material she releases wouldn't smash? The album isn't out so it's not like those other tracks have been getting stale for public consumption like it is when most post 3rd releases are out so no... this thread doesn't really have a true point other than the flamebait it will cause.

Also, Rih gets what Rih wants she barely has put effort into the singles she is literally just releasing the music she wants and letting the public do what they will. AO has slipped under the radar most people know nothing about it but FFS and BBHMM have been doing fantastic and I am not disappointed by their chart run or the actual records. I think the album will be amazing and I will go UP for the good sis Rih no matter what. ATRL is filled with petty gurls that only go with what's #1 anything below and it's shade. Meanwhile the public continues to love Rihanna, the musician and the celebrity and she continues to do what she wants

Yes but the bulk of the album is obviously finished, which means they have their potential singles lined up, and 45S and AO2 were likely supposed to be IT.

We all know she's going to release another 10 singles after the album releases until she finds one that sticks.

For most artists, the point of releasing a single is to sell the album.

For Rihanna, the point of releasing an album is so she can have as many chances as possible to find a single worth selling.

That's why she's a singles artist.

Honestly if everything went #1, I think she would have done the same thing.

It's not like she announced a date and then pushed it back.

Her past era she had her lead single go #1.
