Madonna had clearly maximized her potential as a pop star by that point and the initial Hard Candy sales showed it. She went from 350k to 280k first week despite having a bigger hit. Internationally she was still doing fine, but Hard Candy still sold less than half of Confessions.

Then MDNA was her worst received album ever with what's universally considered her worst single ever as the lead (and it still went Top 10 in 20 countries).

Gaga or not, she was going to decline. The woman hit 50 years of age, in pop star world that means you're not going to get airplay, and the way the media talks about you and how people view you will change. In anything, the Gaga Born This Way controversy probably helped MDNA sales by providing her with press.

Yeah and the song is still unknown (Express Myself, was it, idk?). Nobody knew or cared about it except Madonna fans.

They literally have entire careers dedicated to it now

And Godga was compared to Madead a lot because of their performing skills and their images (#UnapologeticBitches).

Literally no one has come as close as Godga to Madead's throne, I think we can all agree on this.

Hard Candy was just horrendous, she was super lucky that she got 4 Minutes with JT.
