I don't know if you are being reasonable asking someone to stray from their ideals. Ideals and ethics are intertwined in many cases. Maybe you are not old enough to be desensitized to the party politics. They will be throwing red meat to their bases and attacking each other as it has always been. It's actually a lot better now than in the past.

Then you have the 1988 Willie Horton ad that all but crushed Dukakis which attacked him on crime and played the race card at the same time. He never recovered from that ad but he was also never leading Bush so who is to say how effective it really was.
Let's go back to the 1800's the country's first contested presidential election, supporters of Thomas Jefferson claimed incumbent John Adams wanted to marry off his son to the daughter of King George III, creating an American dynasty under British rule.
Jefferson haters called the challenger a fraud, a coward, a thief, and "a mean-spirited, low-lived fellow, the son of a half-breed Indian squaw, sired by a Virginia mulatto father."
James Callender a journalist wrote that Adams was a rageful, lying, warmongering fellow; a “repulsive pedant” and “gross hypocrite” who “behaved neither like a man nor like a woman but instead possessed a hideous hermaphroditical character.”
So as you can see attack ads have existed since the very first contested election.
