Looking back, Man of Steel was kinda a flop for what it was supposed to be, wasn't it? An almost 250 million dollar budget but only makes about 650 million? Plus that probably doesn't take into account the massive marketing.
The fact that Interstellar was made for less, promoted less, and made more money than the return of one of, if not the, the most beloved superheroes of all time. I blame Snyder and the writing.
