I don't know, in this country there's minimum wage laws. It will be illegal to employ someone with a promise of "possible" tips without paying them proper salary. I actually worked as a waiter myself for one week a few years back. I was paid minimum wage, but the boss took away all the tips for himself. Waiters never got an extra penny.

Well not mandatory but if the service is good you definitely SHOULD tip. Waiters basically live on tips, not on the salary they earn per month.

my issue was with him saying "They are all on similar wages" which they are not. Cashiers and whatnot get paid minimum wage or above. Waiters oftentimes do not so it really isn't the same thing imo.

I guess not. But I always leave a tip. Usually depends on how generous I feel, but I aim for at least 20%.

it really just comes down to cultural differences. outside of the US tipping isn't all that common and sometimes it's completely unheard of. Different countries work different ways, if you're not American I guess you don't really understand what it's like for those people over here.

In the United States, yes. The minimum wage for a restaurant waiter is like $2. That's ridiculous. They LIVE off tips. If service is bad, leave them a buck or two, but usually You should leave 15%-18% in my opinion.

My friend and I just had a huge debate while we had dinner at this sushi restaurant. She said it's ridiculous that people complain about others not tipping in restaurants but then they go on not tipping delivery boys as well as in other situations when tipping is deemed mandatory. How do y'all feel about TIPPING and not just in restaurants?

Actually Guernica is right. Even if the waiter/waitress doesn't get tipped, it still gets taken out of his or her paycheck. It is assumed that the person is tipped

Umm.. I eat out quite a lot. More than 9 out of 10 places stick an "optional 12.5% service charge" to the bill. And the total only shows the sum with that charge. Sure, you can say, you don't wanna pay that charge, but it's a lot harder to than not tipping if your food bill was an actual food bill.

I saw a woman on Wendy that rubbed her hand speaking about how much you tip when they discussed it.
