(CNN)Shots were fired on the west front of the U.S. Capitol building Saturday afternoon, Capitol police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said
The suspected shooter was "neutralized" but the building was locked down as a precautionary measure, Schneider said.
U.S. Capitol Police officers also are investigating a suspicious package on the lower west terrace of the Capitol, Schneider said.
