Why I didn't get it in the first place
This makes no sense
They spent a year writing AO2. This is a fact stated by the writer. The main gist of the song was already written and it still took them months to finish it once Rihanna was involved in the writing process. Obviously it didn't come natural.
The Grammys include big hits in their main categories to get the artist to perform and appear in touch with what's popular. It's a TV show, they want relevance and ratings. Citing inclusion as credibility is flawed.
It's not an accident Katy has never won anything. They obviously don't actually respect her much.
Katy at her best is ok. She has yet to demonstrate she is anything more than a hit machine churning out calculated radio candy, which the charts have seen before and forgotten over time. When will people learn that #1s do not a legacy make? Rihanna will take her place as the long-standing quintessential popstar. She can do what Katy does whilst still being "cool".

Roar is great in instrumental form.
Applause's chorus is so addictive, the rest of the song sucks.

In all seriousness, Roar is better than Pon De Replay, Russian Roulette, Diamonds and FourFiveSeconds. So it's in the middle of Rih's lead singles, as SOS, Umbrella, Only Girl and We Found Love are all better.
