Male Final Fantasy character changed for being "too sexy"
Quote:
Back in January, Square Enix revealed Mevius: Final Fantasy, a premium mobile title for the long-running RPG series.
...
The thing that stood out about Mevius though was the design of the unnamed main character. What we were originally shown was a male character in ill-fitting armor and a sliced-up swimsuit. It was essentially the same design aesthetic normally applied to female characters. It wasn't something comletely new for Square Enix, as company has seen similar designs in 2000's Vagrant Story, but it's been a rather rare occurrence.
...
Apparently, certain Japanese fans didn't appreciate Mevius' revealing character design, because Square Enix has backtracked a bit.
Last Thursday, Kitase, project leader Naoki Hamaguchi, managing producer Hiroki Okayama, and an MC simply named Asuna showed off the current build of the game, under a new name: Mobius Final Fantasy. Our previously unnamed protagonist now has a name, Wal, though players can change that name if they see fit. We also gleaned some information on the game's job system, allowing Wal to change his costumes to gain new abilities; the armor-light look Wal sported in early screenshots is the Onion Knight job. One notable change from the previous screenshots is Wal;s lack of open, revealing sides on his outfit. Instead, he now has a high collar and his svelte external obliques are completely covered.
...
"After we released the screenshots in December, we looked at the various reactions we were getting online, and in the end, showing this much skin..." explained Kitase on the stream (as translated by the fine folks at RocketNews24). "For this game, we're moving forward during development and letting it evolve while taking into consideration users' opinions, so I asked the character designer to make a change."
Wal still remains on the lighter clothing side, with exposed calves and arms and an open back showing off his crazy tattoo. The open back even sticks around while Wal is wearing the thicker armor of the Knight class. Okayama and Hamaguchi did comment on missing the original look, and Kitase admits that the design may return if fans speak up enough.
"If enough people say they like those hiplines, then we might bring the original costume back," he added.

That's nonsense, they should have stuck to their original designs. Stylish, over dramatic and skimpy outfits are a part of JRPG culture and ideology.

I think it's mainly because the before outfit looks dumb instead of it being too sexy. But Cindy's outfit is a joke, I agree.

They only changed the costume in which you start the game on, there are still other costumes as "sexy" as the original in the game. They just wanted to give the default outfit another look. Not y'all hoping to the S-E hate bandwagon when things like Gladiolus from FFXV and the male BSDM equipment from FFXIV exists, document yourselves with those double standards gyals.

that is so stupid!
so its OK to over sexualize woman but not men? why? because men will feel "uncomfortable" playing as a sexy semi naked guy but not when they play as some girl in skimpy costume that they can drool over? ughhh sooo transparent I swear.

If Rikku can get away with wearing a g-string, who's going to debut a jockstrap? I'll be waiting Square.

See? And there's another one that has him nearly all naked except some parts using belts and chains. And for the girls already bringing queen Cidney from XV in this, she pretty much has a male counterpart in Gladiolus, and he's on your party most of the time, unlike Cidney.
The original costume is still in the game, they just changed the fact that you don't start with it and instead you use a more simple one that covers more skin at the beggining. There's still key art for the game with the protagonist using the "sexy" outfit so let's not.

I like Square Enix, but you know they wouldn't have changed anything if Wal was a female main character. That's the problem.

Square Enix has ALWAYS been open to objectifying the male body/representing male femininity. They are clearly not the problem.
The problem is the misogynistic/homophobic gaming community that runs rampant has power over stuff like this.

This is what I was thinking too at first. But I try not to do too much on Square though because I feel like they're one of the few Japanese game studios that actually try to push for some sort of gender equality in their games.
They've made many games where the lead was a woman (in respectable clothing too). They've even done this same exact "outfit change" deal with the girls in Bravely Default before it came out because they thought the originals were too scantily clad. So this is a pretty normal thing for them.

I don't think that's true at all though. They did this same type of censorship for the female characters in Bravely Default. There's definitely an issue with double standards in the gaming industry (being run and targeted at mostly men). But of all the studios to call out for being misogynistic, Square is one of the last to come to mind.

I take back my previous posts in this thread. These are both correct, and I had too much of an immediate knee-jerk reaction earlier. I didn't consider all possible factors in this.
I agree that misogyny and homophobia are alarmingly prevalent in the gaming community, and that upsets me. And more upsetting is the fact that things like this happen, game studios being forced to change their original direction to cater to narrow-minded audiences.
