The Vatican has already accepted the fact that aliens exist why god would only create life on one planet seems silly. I don't know many conservatives that think we are alone in the universe but I suspect there are equal amounts of people on either side that think we are.
As for aliens attacking us why would they? They don't need our resources, they can get those from any number of dead planets, moons or asteroids everything we have here is common. So why waste the energy destroying practically everything here to get it.
Why would they contact us, do you stop by an ant hill and try to talk to ants? That is what we would be to any race with the technology to travel to Earth. If they don't want to be seen I am sure they the technology for that as well, we are closing in on that tech ourselves.
I would think the most advanced civilizations in the universe would be at risk of invasion from other advanced civilizations seeking technology or perhaps stopping them from spreading. I think once we are able to travel beyond our star system to other systems quickly we will be slapped down.
