While the country is one of the ones in Central America where LGBT are protected in some areas from discrimination, including hate speech, Parliament approved a new Family Code that is strictly heterosexual in 2014. The new Code went into effect today.

The new Family Code states that marriage and cohabitation are now on the same level, but the unions and all their benefits will only be available to heterosexual couples. It also adds that adoption is also not allowed for homosexual couples.

LGBT in the country will take their case to Nicaragua's Supreme Court next week.

The map below shows constitutional marriage bans in place and Costa Rica as the only one in Central America that grants benefits to gay couples; also gay sex became legal in Nicaragua only in 2008:

Oh Latin America. If it weren't for the progressive countries in the Southern tip of Latin America and the two or three Mexican states that allow gay marriage we wouldn't have it legal anywhere

Sadly, even though some of the Central American countries have laws against homophobia, they are rarely enforced so it's one of the hardest places on the continent to be gay

These politicians aren't aware that they're screwing with LGBT life's. Getting married and having children is a huge step in everyone's life. You shouldn't ban people from this important part of their life and you shouldn't decide for them what's right or wrong. There are so many children that wait for good parents and some of them will never be adopted by anyone. It's so sad.

What also breaks my heart reading about laws like these is that gay couples are purposely cut out of every essential like Social Security and hospital visits

Nicaragua is a mess of poverty, violence and corruption anyway. Their priorities shouldn't be on such trivial things.

Nicaragua's president has a big ego, he bullied the Costa Rica's previous president because she was a girl.

Studies have shown legislation that puts lgbt down costs the country's economy a lot of money while laws that try to equalize better it.

I literally have never heard of this country before.
